La Quinceanera

The Quinceanera is a rite of passage for a young latin girl into womanhood. It is like a wedding except there is no groom. Parents save sometimes from birth as the event can be even larger than a wedding. It is not uncommon to mortgage the house to pay for this tribute. It is truly something to behold, the pageantry,a special day at church and the party are all wonderfull.

The senorita or Dama wears a satin or pastel gown and has a court of Damas and Chambalans. The Chambalans wear tuxedos and there is much music and dancing to Mariachi Bands.

The highlight of the event is the dance of father and daughter. She will change from flats into high heels to show she is now a lady. She will hand a porcelain doll to a younger sister to symbolize her leaving childhood. She oficiates at her own Gala and if you attend you will weep with joy.

Gifts for the young lady from Family and Godparents are generally a cross,Bible, necklace, earings and a tiara. But the guests shower her with much more.

La Quinceanera is for sure the largest birthday party of her life and the largest 15 th birthday party in the world.

La Damita

Selecting your damita: It’s typical to pick a girl between 5 and 10 years old, usually a cousin or sibling. I recommend that she be no older than 10 years old. You don’t have to be related to her — she could be the daughter of a close friend or neighbor. What matters most is that she is a girl whom you want to have a special bond with forever. You’re going to become a role model to her – your quince will shape the dreams she has for her own. You will be spending a lot of time with her, during rehearsals and when shopping, and you can take the time to explain to her the importance of the tradition.
